Chemotherapy and Hair Loss

Chemotherapy is a common treatment for cancer that targets rapidly dividing cells. While effective against cancer cells, it can also affect healthy cells, including those responsible for hair growth.

How Chemotherapy Causes Hair Loss

  • Impact on Hair Follicles: Chemotherapy drugs attack rapidly dividing cells, including hair follicle cells, leading to a temporary interruption of the hair growth cycle.

  • Pattern of Hair Loss: Hair loss typically occurs over the entire scalp (diffuse hair loss) and can affect eyebrows, eyelashes, and body hair as well.

When Does Hair Loss Usually Occur?

  • Hair loss often begins 1 to 3 weeks after starting chemotherapy.

  • The extent varies depending on the type and dose of medication used.

Is Hair Loss Permanent?

  • In most cases, hair loss caused by chemotherapy is temporary.

  • Hair usually begins to regrow sometime after treatment ends, though the new growth may initially be finer or different in texture or color.
  • In rare cases, some patients may experience long-term or permanent hair loss.

Managing Chemotherapy-Related Hair Loss

  • Wigs and Head Coverings: Many patients opt for wigs, scarves, or hats during treatment.

  • Gentle Hair Care: Use mild shampoos, avoid harsh chemicals, and be gentle when washing or brushing.

  • Cooling Caps: Some clinics offer scalp cooling programs to reduce blood flow to hair follicles during chemo, potentially lowering the risk of hair loss.

Support and Advice

If you're undergoing chemotherapy, discuss hair loss concerns with your oncologist or healthcare team. They can provide guidance, support, and options tailored to your treatment plan.
